AKWritan means….
I figured I should explain what ‘akwritan’ means, as that is my URL.
For those of you interested in Old English, you may already know. For the rest of you on the planet, here goes:
AK = Alaska ; Writan = to score
Now, this is not the modern meaning of the word ’score.’ It was Old English and meant ‘as on a piece of wood or rock with an awl to produce a mark.’ The word was later adapted into Germanic and became the word we know as ‘write’, which then meant to scratch, carve or cut. Obviously, they had no writen language of mass production during those days, hence the meaning had nothing to do with pen and paper. However, as time went on, the word stayed and the meaning changed into the common usage of today.
As for the ak (Alaska) part, it is because I hail from the greatest state in the union. Yes, I mean Alaska. I was born here in the frozen north and I love every minute of it (well, maybe not below -20, but that is not very often any more).
You may be asking why I picked such a weird URL? Being a teacher as well as a writer, I like to play with words. Finding new (or in this case old) meanings for words is fun. Just for kicks, try it sometime. It just might make for a good laugh!
